Uruguayan Senate supports Argentina’s claim to the Malvinas

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – In Uruguay, a draft declaration has been presented. The Senate of the Republic expresses its support for the Argentine Republic’s claim to sovereignty over the Malvinas also known as the Falkland Islands.

The Uruguayans who volunteered to fight against the United Kingdom are also remembered on this occasion.

“On April 2, the Republic of Argentina celebrates the Day of Veterans and Fallen of the Malvinas War, established by Law No. 25,370 of November 22, 2000. This date corresponds to the landing of Argentine troops on April 2, 1982, in the Malvinas, occupied by Great Britain since 1833. Apart from the fact that the conflict was also an attempt by the Argentine civil-military dictatorship to conceal the terrible social, political and economic situation to which it has led the country, we would like to express once again our support for our brother country’s legitimate claim to sovereignty over its territory.”

“We would like to express once again our support for the legitimate sovereignty claim of our brother country in relation to its territory.”

At this point, a bill is to be passed that states, “The Senate of the Eastern Republic of Uruguay DECLARES: Recognition for the veterans and fallen of the Malvinas War for their service on the 40th anniversary of that date, and thus recognition for the entire Argentine Republic; and especially also for the 763 volunteers from our country who, although they were not called up, volunteered to defend, together with the Argentine Army, the sovereignty over the Malvinas Islands.”

Then, it mentions Uruguay’s support in the Malvinas issue:

“Uruguay reaffirms its firm support for the legitimate rights of the Argentine Republic over the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland over the Malvinas, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, as well as the surrounding maritime areas, and confirms the permanent regional interest in the United Kingdom’s willingness to resume negotiations with the Argentine Republic in order to find – as soon as possible – a peaceful and definitive solution to this dispute.”

On the other hand, the draft

“expresses concern over the continued usurpation by the United Kingdom of the Malvinas Islands, South Georgia, the South Sandwich Islands and the surrounding maritime areas, an occupation that currently constitutes one of the last colonial enclaves in Latin America. Its intention to cooperate to the best of its ability in the highest diplomatic actions of the Government of the Argentine Republic aimed at the recovery of its sovereignty over these territories, provided that these actions are based on peace and the principles of international law.”
