United Airlines adds a daily nonstop from Washington Dulles to Liberia, Costa Rica, from Thursday, 17 December 2026. It runs only to Monday, 4 January 2027, and no return has been announced.

United Airlines flies nonstop from Washington Dulles to Guanacaste Airport in Liberia, Costa Rica, every day from Thursday, 17 December 2026. The last flights are on Monday, 4 January 2027, so the season covers 19 days over Christmas and New Year.

It is the first nonstop link between the Washington area and Guanacaste, and United says it is the only one. For travelers in Washington, Virginia and Maryland, it removes the change of planes.

What United Is Launching

United announced the route in mid-July, together with Costa Rica’s tourism institute and the airport operator. Patch, a US local news site, carried it on Tuesday, 14 July 2026, and the Tico Times followed on Wednesday, 15 July.

Henry Bird, who runs United’s Dulles hub, said the flight lets Washington-area travelers trade winter weather for beaches and national parks. Tom Kozlowski, United’s network planning manager for Latin America, said the seasonal service targets East Coast travelers.

The Flight Schedule and Aircraft

The Tico Times reports a published schedule: departure from Dulles at 8:51 a.m., landing in Liberia at 12:50 p.m. local time. Costa Rica keeps the same clock all year, so in December it is one hour behind Washington.

The return leaves Liberia at 2:00 p.m. and reaches Dulles at 7:35 p.m. local time. That makes the trip south about five hours and the trip home about four and a half hours.

The plane is a Boeing 737 MAX 9 with 179 seats, 20 of them in business class. The airport operator gave the seat count when the route was announced.

Dulles sits in northern Virginia, and United calls itself the largest major airline in the Washington region. Patch says United flies nonstop from Dulles to 19 Latin American destinations.

Why Guanacaste and Why Now

The United States is Costa Rica’s largest source of international visitors, according to the country’s tourism institute. Marcos Borges, the institute’s executive president, said the route strengthens air access from that market.

Borges said the flight will serve residents of Washington, Virginia and Maryland and draw on United’s northeastern network. Renata González, commercial and communications manager at Guanacaste Aeropuerto, called the route a milestone for the destination.

Guanacaste Aeropuerto is part of the VINCI Airports network. With Dulles, United now serves it from seven US hubs, including Newark, Denver, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston and Chicago.

Where the Flight Lands

The flight lands at Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport, known as Guanacaste Airport, which serves Liberia in Guanacaste province. The Tico Times names Playas del Coco, Tamarindo, Flamingo, Nosara and the Gulf of Papagayo as likely destinations.

The airport’s website lists currency exchange, ATMs, free Wi-Fi, restaurants, shops and car rental services. It also links a ground transportation service and a travel-tips page for arriving passengers.

None of the sources checked gives drive times or shuttle prices to the beach towns. Ask your hotel or rental company for current transfer times before you book.

Entry Rules and Safety for US Visitors

US citizens do not need a visa for stays shorter than 180 days, the State Department says. The passport must be valid for the entire stay, and travelers need a return or onward ticket.

Visitors may carry up to US$10,000 in cash into or out of the country. Overstays can bring fines, delays, deportation or a future entry ban.

Proof of yellow fever vaccination is required only for arrivals from certain countries in South America or Africa. The State Department also advises staying current on the vaccines the CDC recommends.

The State Department advises travelers to exercise increased caution in Costa Rica because of crime. Minor theft is the most common risk for tourists, and violent crime such as armed robbery also occurs.

The advisory says the government adds security in tourist areas. The US Embassy in San José urges visitors to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program.

How the Route Fits United’s Costa Rica Network

United already flies a seasonal Dulles to San José route, and the new Liberia flights complement it. San José is the capital, while Liberia is the gateway to the northern Pacific beaches.

Patch calls Liberia United’s sixth new international destination from Dulles this year. The others are Reykjavík, Halifax, Québec City, Los Cabos and Cartagena.

United starts the Cartagena route on the same day, Thursday, 17 December 2026. Other US airlines have also announced new Costa Rica routes for this winter, listed in the guide linked below.

What It Means for You

If you live near Washington, a morning departure puts you in Guanacaste by early afternoon. Because the plane lands at 12:50 p.m. local time, you have most of the afternoon to reach your hotel.

The season is short, so the 19 days from 17 December to 4 January are the whole nonstop window. A trip that ends after Monday, 4 January 2027 would need a different routing home.

Compare fares before you commit, because the announcements gave no prices. Carry your passport and a return ticket, and keep the dates flexible in case United changes the schedule.

What Is Not Known

United has not published fares in the announcements checked, and booking fees and baggage rules were not stated. Whether every date between 17 December and 4 January is open for sale was not confirmed.

United has not said whether the Liberia flight will return after Monday, 4 January 2027 or in later winters. Only the Tico Times gave the flight times, which the airport and tourism releases did not state, and United may adjust them.

No flight numbers were published in the sources checked. Drive times and transfer prices from the airport to the beach towns were also missing.

What Comes Next

The first flight leaves Dulles on Thursday, 17 December 2026, eight weeks from Thursday, 22 October. The last scheduled flight is on Monday, 4 January 2027.

Any extension beyond that date would have to come from United. Check the airline’s booking page for open dates before you plan around the route.
