Tragic Helicopter Crash Claims Life of Ex-Chilean President Piñera

On Tuesday, February 6, Sebastián Piñera, the former President of Chile, died in a helicopter crash.

This sad event took place over Lago Branco, Los Rios region, nearly 900 km from Santiago, around 3 PM. Reports from La Tercera, Clarín, and ABC shared this news.

The helicopter had four people on board; three survived, thanks to rescue efforts. The Navy found the helicopter 40 meters underwater.

Piñera, piloting the helicopter, couldn’t undo his seatbelt, leading to his drowning.

After hearing the news, Chile’s President Gabriel Boric rushed to La Moneda Palace, and an investigation began immediately.

Carolina Tohá, the Interior Minister, stated Piñera would receive full state honors. Boric has arranged a state funeral.

Piñera led Chile twice, facing an impeachment trial in 2021 over corruption allegations. Yet, the Senate cleared him. He leaves behind four children.

Leaders from Argentina and Brazil, including President Javier Milei and ex-President Mauricio Macri, offered their condolences.

João Doria, a former governor, also mourned Piñera, recalling their recent meeting.
