Brazil’s Government Sells 600 Properties Obtained in Anti-Trafficking Lawsuits

By · July 18, 2019 · 2 min read

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The National Secretariat for Drug Policy (SENAD) has released a georeferenced panel with the precise location and detailed information on 612 properties to be sold by the Secretariat for Coordination and Governance of the Union’s Heritage (SCGPU).

These are apartments, ranches, lands, buildings, lots, farms, estates, warehouses, and other property in all regions of the country, seized in drug trafficking lawsuits. Of this total, 34 are located in the Federal District.

The secretariat explains that, in practice, the panel reduces red tape and facilitates the swift disposition of these assets, earmarked for the National Anti-Drug Fund (FUNAD), thus generating resources for anti-drug policies. The website provides easy access to any citizen’s queries, with precise geographical coordinates for each state and municipality.

The panel also contains information on complete or incomplete judicial documentation of properties, showing whether there is any pending matter regarding the documents sent by the Judiciary to SENAD.

When the documentation is complete, the asset may then be auctioned, after verification of administrative requirements and procedures to effect its sale.

SENAD, in partnership with SCGPU, expects the project to reduce the amount of confiscated properties through auctions, and increase fundraising for effective public policies on drugs in Brazil.

Sérgio Moro, Minister of Justice and Public Safety, which controls SENAD, praised the release of the georeferenced panel. On social media, the former judge made a point of emphasizing the 612 properties mapped and the goal of the project.

FUNAD’s real estate derives from the confiscation of property seized in criminal proceedings related to drug trafficking and other crimes provided for in Law No. 11.343/2006 (Drug Law).

The registration is carried out in the GFUNAD system — which promotes the safekeeping and management of data on the fund’s assets, based on information sent by the Judiciary to SENAD.
