The Colombian stock market closed higher today, with the MSCI COLCAP index adding 0.43% to finish at 1,656.79 units, showing resilience amid global market turbulence following Moody’s downgrade of U.S. sovereign debt.

This positive performance continues a strong year for Colombian equities, which have outperformed many regional peers despite ongoing economic challenges.

The COLCAP index gained 7.19 points today, extending its upward trajectory as seen in the chart. The index is currently trading at 1,656.79, with a high of 1,658.24 and a low of 1,648.19 during the session.

This performance is particularly notable given the mixed reactions in global markets to recent geopolitical and economic developments. The Colombian market has shown remarkable strength in 2025, with significant gains since January.

Market Fundamentals

Colombian equities continue to trade at attractive valuations compared to historical averages and regional peers. The market’s price-to-earnings ratio stands at 7.4x, slightly higher than last month’s 7.3x but still well below historical norms. The price-to-sales ratio remains stable at 0.9x.

The Colombian market’s total capitalization reached Col$391.1 trillion as of today, representing a modest increase from Col$383.3 trillion in April. This growth reflects improving investor sentiment despite ongoing economic challenges.

Inflation remains a concern, with the latest reading at 5.16%, slightly above the previous month’s 5.09%. According to BanRep’s economists’ survey, inflation expectations for December 2025 have increased by 20 basis points to 4.59%, reflecting persistent inflationary pressures.

Global Market Context

U.S. markets showed mixed performance today as investors processed Moody’s downgrade of U.S. sovereign debt from AAA to Aa1.

The S&P 500 managed a slight gain of 0.09%, extending its winning streak to six consecutive days, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose by 0.32%. The Nasdaq Composite barely moved, edging up just 0.02%.

Treasury yields rose following the downgrade, with the 10-year yield approaching 4.5% and the 30-year yield exceeding 5%, reaching levels not seen since late 2023. The U.S. dollar weakened against major currencies, with the Dollar Index down 0.72% to 100.22.

European and Asian markets generally declined, with Japan’s Nikkei down 0.7% and Chinese blue-chip stocks falling 0.3% after disappointing retail sales data.

Expert Analysis

Market analyst Felipe Campos of Alianza Valores noted that currency stability has been crucial for attracting foreign investment to Colombian equities: “The steady peso, hovering between 4,000–4,500 COP/USD, has boosted confidence and cut risks, drawing more foreign cash.”

Andrés Moreno Jaramillo of Universidad del Rosario observed that the market has been forward-looking, noting significant gains in 2025 as investors anticipate political changes: “The market read the future,” suggesting that investors are betting on a market-friendly government in 2026.

Technical Analysis

The COLCAP index is maintaining positions above key moving averages, suggesting underlying market strength. As visible in the chart, the index is currently trading above all major moving averages, with technical indicators pointing to continued bullish possibilities.

The chart shows that after a strong rally from late January through February, the market has been consolidating in a range between approximately 1,600 and 1,700 points. Recent price action shows the index holding above the 50-day moving average, which is a positive technical signal.

The current price of 1,656.79 sits comfortably above the support level at around 1,631, with resistance near the recent high of 1,690. The Bollinger Bands visible on the chart suggest moderate volatility with a slight upward bias.

ETF Flows

In the broader ETF market, Vanguard led Friday’s inflows with a substantial $3.5 billion gain, followed by Invesco with $1.4 billion and iShares with $1.2 billion.

On the outflow side, SPDR experienced the largest decline with $3.6 billion in losses, while Avantis shed over $400 million and ProShares lost $366 million.

These flows reflect shifting investor sentiment amid global economic uncertainties and changing expectations regarding Federal Reserve policy, with markets now pricing in only 49 basis points of rate cuts for the year, down from over 100 basis points a month ago.

Outlook

Looking ahead, the Colombian stock market is expected to trade at 1,627.32 points by the end of this quarter, according to Trading Economics models and analyst expectations. The 12-month forecast suggests a moderation to 1,569.84 points.

Key factors to watch include the upcoming 2026 elections, which loom large over market sentiment, as well as global trade tensions, particularly between the U.S. and China, which could impact Colombian exports and economic growth.

The Colombian peso closed at 4,170.00 against the U.S. dollar, unchanged from the previous session. Scotiabank Colpatria projects the peso at 4,367 for 2025 and 4,364 for 2026, suggesting expectations of relative stability in the currency market.

As Colombia navigates both domestic political uncertainties and global economic headwinds, the market’s resilience suggests investors continue to see value in Colombian equities despite the challenges ahead.
