Thursday’s Rio Nightlife Pick – Famed Cuban band, Buena Vista Social Club, play Vivo Rio tonight as part of their farewell tour “Adios”.
The band originally formed in Havana in the 1940s as players of traditional Cuban music but gained worldwide acclaim in the Nineties after a 1997 album, a 1999 film of their music were released.
The success of both the album and film sparked a revival of international interest in traditional Cuban music and Latin American music in general. Some of the songs are instantly recognized, like “Candela” and “Chan Chan”, the first song on the 1997 self titled album.

Buena Vista Social Club (Flamengo)
The tireless and vivacious players of Cuban group Buena Vista Social Club perform in Rio this evening as part of their final tour. With a mix of musicians, young and old, the band will play a selection of some of their famous hits as well as lesser-known material. Tonight is once-in-a-lifetime to see this remarkable band.

The Veneno party is back at Casa da Matriz tonight. For over ten years the weekly event, filled with good music and beautiful people, have helped start weekends early in Rio. On the second floor tonight, rock and video games combine to make a party of Nineties grunge and indie rock Mega Drive.

Tonight the Cabaret Lounge in Botafogo will host the Dose Dupla party. It’s all about samba tonight at Lapa’s Carioca da Gema as Nelson Felix gets things started at 8:30 PM. Moyseis Marques follows at 10:30 PM with veterans of the samba genre delivering one of the best rodas de samba in the city tonight.

Salsa and Forró Leviano (Lapa)
The Salsa and Forró party is back at Lapa’s Leviano bar tonight and that means it’s time to dance. The group Mano a Mano will start things off at 8PM with salsa and merengue on the first floor and later singer Marcelo Mimoso will perform the best of Forró on the second floor. Additionally, Lucas de Moraes will perform during happy hour and DJ Angolano will spin salsa and DJ Léo Araripe will spin forró during show intervals.
