Rio de Janeiro Will Reopen Low-cost Restaurants in 2020 to Fight Hunger

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Recently, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) released a survey showing an increase in the number of people living in extreme poverty in the country, including Rio de Janeiro. As a result, new ways to provide access to healthy food in the state are planned for 2020.

The reopening of low-cost restaurants, the implementation of farmer’s markets in needy communities and support for family and urban agriculture are some of the measures that should be adopted.

They were announced last week at an event held in the auditorium of the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ).

“We are going to reopen all the low-cost restaurants. And we’re going to start with the Central Station, which is an emblematic place where many people in vulnerable situations pass through and where there is a shelter for the homeless,” says Cristiane Lamarão, under-secretary for SUAS Management and Food Security.

“And it will not only be a place for food, but also for people training and education”, adds Cristiane. According to the under-secretary, the project has already been finalized by the State Secretariat of Works and the budget is now being defined so that the bidding can be carried out.

The date of reinauguration has not yet been determined.
