Resilient Rise: Chile’s Exports Climb Despite Global Challenges

Between January and May 2024, Chile witnessed a modest yet significant 1.9% increase in goods exports, achieving $41.784 billion in international sales.

Significant copper and cherry exports fueled the increase, as noted in the Monthly Trade Report using Central Bank and Customs data.

This growth, largely fueled by commodities like copper concentrates, fresh cherries, and grapes, offset declines in lithium and molybdenum exports.

Claudia Sanhueza, the Undersecretary, emphasized the strategic expansion of Chile’s export portfolio as a boost to national productivity and international trade engagement.

Mining remained the heavyweight sector, amassing $23.057 billion in exports—an 8.2% increase from last year.

This sector thrived on the robust performance of copper, gold, and iron.

The fruit sector also excelled, with fresh fruit exports like cherries and grapes reaching $4.817 billion, marking a 16.6% increase.

The beginning of winter also saw fresh shipments of kiwis, mandarins, and oranges.

Meanwhile, Chile’s wine industry, a global leader, enjoyed a 6.9% rise in sales, totaling $639 million.

Predominantly, bottled wines like Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay spearheaded this growth.

However, not all sectors fared well. The food industry saw a slight decline of 1%, totaling $5.191 billion.

Despite these mixed results, Chile maintained a robust trade surplus of $10.043 billion by May’s end.

This was amidst a general trade contraction of 0.9%, largely due to a 4.2% drop in imports, which stood at $34.077 billion.

Chile’s strategic diversification and its commitment to enhancing exportable goods underscore its resilience in a fluctuating global economy.
