Petrobras, Brazil’s state-controlled oil company, has said one clear thing about Amazon coast oil: laboratory tests on the first find confirmed good quality. It has published no grade figure for any of the three oil-bearing layers hit in the same well.
For a US reader, quality matters because lighter crude is easier to refine into gasoline, diesel and jet fuel. Petrobras shares trade in New York as PBR, and they closed at US$21.90 on Thursday 29 October 2026.
What Happened
Petrobras announced the first oil find in its Morpho well on 14 August 2026, in block FZA-M-59 off Amapá state. The well sits in 2,886 metres (about 9,470 feet) of water in the Amazon Mouth Basin, called Foz do Amazonas in Portuguese.
On Friday 2 October the company announced a second oil-bearing layer. Its release said analyses already run on the August oil confirmed good quality, while samples from the new layer still needed laboratory analysis.
On Thursday 29 October Petrobras announced a third layer in the same well, as our report on the third find explains. Chief executive Magda Chambriard said the company’s technical persistence produced three discoveries in one well, which leaves it more optimistic.
Drilling and data collection at Morpho are now finished, and crews will seal the well in a standard step called abandonment. The rig will then move to the Potiguar Basin off Rio Grande do Norte state to drill a site called Mãe de Ouro.

Why It Matters
Oil is graded in degrees API, a scale set by the American Petroleum Institute. The higher the number, the lighter the oil, and crude above about 31 degrees is usually called light.
In a 2010 filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, Petrobras put the average oil in its Tupi wells at about 28 degrees API. Tupi is a pre-salt field, a deep rock layer under a thick salt crust, and pre-salt is Brazil’s oil heartland.
Lighter oil usually sells for more per barrel and gives refiners more fuel from each one. That is why a quality statement about Amazon coast oil can move a company’s value before any volume is known.
Petrobras says the block fits its long-term strategy of replacing oil and gas reserves by exploring new frontiers. Our explainer on Petrobras describes what the company is and how it works.

What It Means for You
If you own PBR shares, the quality statement on Amazon coast oil is encouraging but it is not a reserve number. Investors price oil finds on volumes and costs, and Petrobras has published neither for Morpho.
If you drive in the United States, nothing changes at the pump from this news. Oil from this frontier is years away, and far larger flows set the world oil price.
The find is part of a wider race for Atlantic oil, since neighbouring Guyana became a producer within a few years of its first discovery. Petrobras says the three layers leave it more optimistic about the Equatorial Margin, the oil-rich seabed off Brazil’s north.
Federal prosecutors asked an appeals court in September to halt drilling in the block. Ibama, the federal environment agency, licensed the drilling in October 2025 and cleared three more wells, as our report on the three new wells explains.
What Is Not Known
Petrobras has published no gravity figure, sulphur content or laboratory report for Amazon coast oil in any of the three layers. Numbers quoted outside its written releases are unconfirmed.
The size of the accumulation is unknown, and the company has not said whether the three layers connect. Three more wells planned in the same block are meant to measure the find.
Whether the oil can be produced at a profit in such deep water decides everything else. Petrobras has not declared any of the finds commercial, and it has given no date for a decision.
Sulphur content matters because it decides how costly the crude is to refine. Until that number is public, nobody outside the company can say whether Amazon coast oil is as good as the company’s early words suggest.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Petrobras’s Amazon Coast Oil Good Quality?
Petrobras says tests on the first find, announced in August, confirmed good quality. It has published no grade figure for any of the three layers.
Does Good Oil Mean the Find Is Commercial?
No, quality is only one part of the answer. Petrobras still has to show how much oil there is and whether it can be produced at a profit.
When Could Amazon Coast Oil Reach the Market?
Not before the three more wells planned in the same block are drilled and tested. Production, if the finds prove commercial, would come years later.
