Brent and WTI crude prices faced downward pressure over the last 24 hours, as data from TradingView charts and official market sources showed both benchmarks declining after OPEC+ announced a higher-than-expected production increase for August.

Brent closed near $66.11 per barrel, while WTI settled close to $63.73 per barrel. The market responded with increased volatility and high trading volumes, reflecting traders’ concerns about oversupply and soft demand.

OPEC+ confirmed a production hike of 548,000 barrels per day for August, which exceeded previous monthly increases and led to immediate selling pressure.

The group justified the move by pointing to stable fundamentals and a steady global economic outlook, but traders interpreted the decision as a sign of intensifying competition for market share.

The United States reported crude inventories at a ten-month high, while gasoline and diesel stocks also remained elevated, further capping any price rallies.

Technical analysis of the daily and four-hour charts for both Brent and WTI revealed a bearish setup. The daily charts showed prices trading below the 50-day and 100-day moving averages.

Oil Market Under Pressure

The 200-day moving average acted as a key resistance. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) for both benchmarks hovered below 50, indicating weak momentum and a lack of buying interest.

The Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) indicator displayed a bearish crossover, with the signal line below zero and the histogram negative, confirming the downward trend.

Bollinger Bands on the daily and four-hour charts widened after the recent price drop, reflecting increased volatility. Prices approached the lower bands, suggesting the market moved into oversold territory.

However, neither Brent nor WTI showed a clear reversal signal, and both remained near critical support levels—Brent at $65.37 and WTI at $63.47. A break below these levels could trigger further declines.

Trading volumes spiked as the market digested the OPEC+ news, and open interest in oil futures reached record highs in late June. ETF flows into oil-specific funds remained muted, as investors shifted focus to other commodities and equities amid heightened uncertainty.

Managed funds reduced net-long positions and some established new shorts, reflecting a more cautious stance. Demand signals from Asia and Europe stayed weak, with industrial activity below historical norms.

The United States continued to see high inventory levels, limiting any upside. Geopolitical risks, including ongoing tensions in the Middle East and Russia, did not escalate further but contributed to the cautious mood.

Oil markets now face a period of heightened uncertainty, with technical and fundamental indicators both pointing to continued downside risk.

Traders and investors will closely watch support levels and upcoming macroeconomic data for signs of stabilization or further weakness.
