Oil and Natural Gas Production Grows 8.1 Percent in 2019

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazilian oil and natural gas production in 2019 was 3.559 million barrels of oil equivalent (BOE) per day, for an annual total of 1.299 billion barrels, an increase of 8.1 percent over 2018, the National Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels Agency (ANP) reported yesterday, January 31st.

According to the agency, the state of Rio de Janeiro, where the Lula and Búzios fields are located, has been increasing its share in national production. Last year, the state was the largest producer of oil and natural gas, representing 71 percent of the total volume produced in the country, 5.3 percent more than in 2018, with a production of 2.528 million BOE per day.

Next up is the state of São Paulo, with a share of 11.5 percent in total production: 409,770 BOE per day. According to ANP, Espírito Santo was the third-largest producing state, with a production of 333,680 BOE per day, corresponding to 9.4 percent of the country’s oil and natural gas production.

Total deep water “pre-salt” production in 2019 reached 2.183 million BOE per day, representing 61.3 percent of national production. The Lula field, in the Santos Basin, was the largest producing field and recorded a daily average of 1.196 million BOE per day, accounting for 33 percent of all national production in the year.

According to ANP, the offshore fields produced 2.683 million barrels of oil per day and 99.8 million cubic meters of natural gas per day, which represented, respectively, 96.3 and 81.4 percent of national production. From the onshore fields, 104,100 barrels of oil per day and 22.73 million cubic meters of natural gas were extracted, representing, respectively, a 6.53 percent reduction in oil and a 3.56 percent increase in natural gas compared to the previous year’s onshore production, the agency reported.

December

In December 2019, oil production was 3.107 million BOE per day, up 0.5 percent from the previous month’s record and 15.4 percent from December 2018. According to ANP, natural gas production also exceeded the previous month’s total, with an increase of 0.9 percent and reaching a daily average of 138 million cubic meters of natural gas. Compared to December 2018, there was an increase of 21.2 percent.
