Odebrecht and Bento Pedroso Construções, a member of the Brazilian group, have won a US$1.168 billion contract to build the Luena-Saurimo section of the Benguela Railway in Angola, according to a presidential decree.

In the decree, the Angolan President authorizes the expenditure of US$1.168 million and formalizes simplified contracting (by direct award) by material criteria for designing and constructing the 260-kilometer section.

The railroad, between the coast and the interior of Angola, from Benguela to Mexico, will allow the transport of goods from the Port of Lobito to the Lundas Region

In the dispatch, the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, justifies the investment with the need to improve rail transport, the volume of goods, and the number of passengers transported.

He highlighted the importance of this railroad axis in the connection between the coast and the interior of Angola, from Benguela to Moxico, allowing the transport of goods from the Port of Lobito to the Lundas Region.

According to Lusa, the aim is to provide that area with a safe, reliable, and competitive means of transport that will boost activities such as mining, “which is highly dependent on means of transport to meet logistical needs,” as well as boost the Planagrão project, whose aim is to promote industries and their derivatives, focusing on the provinces of Lunda Norte, Lunda Sul, Moxico and Cuando Cubango.
