Mozambique and Rwanda reciprocally abolish visas

By · October 21, 2022 · 2 min read

Mozambique and Rwanda have reciprocally abolished entry visas for citizens of both countries, based on an agreement signed Thursday in Kigali, the Rwandan capital, the Mozambican news agency reported today.

By eliminating the need for entry visas for our citizens, [the measure] will contribute to bringing our two countries closer together,” said the Mozambican Interior Minister, Arsénia Massingue, cited today by the Mozambican Information Agency (AIM).

The citizens of both countries can stay in Mozambique and Rwanda for up to 90 days without a visa.

According to Massingue, the agreement comes in fulfillment of an understanding between the Mozambican President, Filipe Nyusi, and his Rwandan counterpart, Paul Kagamé, to “facilitate the promotion of tourism, culture, investment and socio-economic development between the two countries.

She called for an expedited preparation of the agreement’s ratification so that it can enter into force this year.

Rwandan troops have supported Mozambique since 2021 to combat the armed insurgency in Cabo Delgado, in the north of the country, ensuring security around the gas projects under construction in the region, led by French oil company TotalEnergies.
