A powerful southern Mexico earthquake rattled the Pacific coast and briefly raised the threat of a tsunami, before officials stood the warning down. The quake caused alarm across the region but, so far, remarkably little damage.

The tremor struck offshore Chiapas on 17 July at a depth of about 10 kilometres, near the border with Guatemala. Mexican authorities put its magnitude at 7.4, while the US Geological Survey recorded 7.3, as Mexico News Daily reported.

A wide reach, a limited toll

The shaking spread far beyond the epicentre. It was felt across Chiapas and Oaxaca, in Mexico City hundreds of kilometres away, and across the borders in Guatemala and El Salvador, according to CNN.

Yet the human toll was light for a quake of this size. Authorities reported no deaths and no major structural collapse. Damage in Chiapas was limited to cracks in some buildings, and two people were injured in the border city of Tapachula, one after jumping from a third floor during the shaking and another struck by a falling door.

The tsunami warning that came and went

Because the epicentre was offshore, the quake triggered an immediate tsunami warning along parts of the Pacific coast of Mexico and Guatemala. Monitoring stations recorded small waves, around 0.33 metres at Chiapas and 0.32 metres at Puerto Madero, well short of a destructive surge.

With no dangerous waves materialising, the alert was cancelled within hours. The brief scare was a reminder of how quickly a coastal quake can escalate from a tremor to an evacuation, even when the sea ultimately stays calm.

Aftershocks and a fault that never rests

The ground has not fully settled. Dozens of aftershocks followed the main quake, the largest around magnitude 6.5, and the sequence continued into the weekend with further tremors near Tapachula. Aftershocks of this kind can persist for days or weeks, and can compound damage to already-weakened structures.

Southern Mexico is one of the most seismically active regions on earth, where the Cocos tectonic plate grinds beneath the North American plate. The zone produced the deadly earthquakes of 2017, which is partly why coastal communities responded quickly this time.
