Mexican equities closed sharply lower Thursday as the S&P/BMV IPC index dropped 1.15% to 57,894.82 points. The benchmark fell from Wednesday’s high of 58,568.01 points after global markets turned negative.

The index traded between a daily high of 58,561.77 points and a low of 57,795.68 points. This created a trading range of 1.31% during the session. Volume remained above average as investors reacted to weak global sentiment.

Technical indicators paint a mixed picture for the Mexican market. The RSI sits at 59.517, suggesting buying momentum remains intact. However, the Stochastic oscillator reached 99.618, indicating severely overbought conditions that triggered profit-taking.

Moving averages continue to support the bullish trend. The index trades above all major moving averages, with the 200-day MA at 56,263.29 providing strong support.

The 50-day MA at 58,034.64 acts as immediate support, while the 20-day MA at 58,481.48 represents resistance. MACD readings show a positive 132.99 value, confirming upward momentum despite Thursday’s decline.

Bollinger Bands suggest increased volatility as the index approaches the upper band near current levels. Mining giant Industrias Penoles bucked the negative trend, surging 3.32% to 422.68 MXN.

The company continues its stellar run with over 50% gains in the past year. Coca-Cola Femsa followed with a 2.91% rise to 185.00 MXN, while Grupo Aeroportuario Del Sureste climbed 1.76% to 668.00 MXN.

Megacable Holdings suffered the steepest decline, plummeting 5.78% to 50.68 MXN. Gentera dropped 1.95% to 38.15 MXN, and GCC shed 1.58% to close at 176.53 MXN. Market breadth remained negative with 140 declining stocks versus 93 advancing issues.

The Mexican market’s performance contrasts sharply with regional peers. Asian markets declined broadly, with Japan’s Nikkei falling 0.7% and South Korea’s Kospi dropping 1.1%. Indian markets also struggled as the Sensex fell 869 points.

Mexico’s index maintains impressive year-to-date gains of 17.69% despite Thursday’s setback. The benchmark sits just 1.15% below its 2025 high and trades 18.26% above its yearly low of 48,957.24 points.

Recent monetary policy support from Banco de Mexico continues to underpin market sentiment. The central bank’s 50 basis point rate cut to 8.50% on May 15 has eased borrowing costs while maintaining attractive real yields.

Fibonacci retracement levels suggest immediate support at 57,800 points, representing the 38.2% level from recent lows. Resistance appears at 59,000 points, aligning with the 61.8% Fibonacci level and previous highs.

The peso weakened 0.15% against the dollar to 19.38, reflecting broader emerging market pressure. Gold futures rose 0.98% to $3,316.75 per ounce, while crude oil fell 1.10% to $61.35 per barrel.
