Mexico’s benchmark S&P/BMV IPC index gained 0.44% on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, closing at 58,568.01 points after bouncing from technical support levels.

The index traded between an intraday high of 58,632.23 and a low of 58,071.10 points, representing a daily trading range of 0.96%. This positive performance followed Tuesday’s 0.31% decline that had temporarily halted the market’s upward momentum.

Mining giant Industrias Penoles led Wednesday’s gainers with a substantial 3.32% rise to 422.68 MXN, continuing its impressive performance that has yielded over 50% gain in the past year.

Coca-Cola Femsa followed with a 2.91% increase to 185.00 MXN, while Grupo Aeroportuario Del Sureste rounded out the top three with a 1.76% climb to 668.00 MXN. Other notable gainers included Grupo Mexico (+1.73%) and Bolsa Mexicana de Valores (+1.55%).

Megacable Holdings suffered the steepest decline, falling 5.78% to 50.68 MXN. Gentera dropped 1.95% to 38.15 MXN, and GCC shed 1.58% to end at 176.53 MXN.

S&P/BMV IPC Surges Amid Strong Economic Fundamentals

The chart shows the index trading above all major moving averages, with prices testing the upper Bollinger Band. The recent price action shows a strong bounce from the 9-day moving average, confirming the underlying uptrend remains intact.

Volume patterns show healthy participation during Wednesday’s advance, validating the price action. The S&P/BMV IPC has gained an impressive 17.69% since the beginning of 2025, outperforming many regional peers.

This stellar performance comes despite global market turbulence, with the index now hovering near its all-time high of 59,020.55 reached in February 2024.

Mexico’s economic resilience continues to attract investors. The country recorded a $3.44 billion trade surplus in March, its second consecutive monthly surplus.

This strong export performance underscores Mexico‘s capacity to weather US tariff risks and adapt to tighter supply chains under the evolving North American trade framework.

Banco de México’s recent monetary policy has also supported equities. The central bank’s third consecutive 50 basis-point rate cut to 8.50% on May 15 has eased borrowing costs without undermining real yields, encouraging credit growth and underpinning financial-sector profits.

Gold futures for June delivery rose 0.98% to $3,316.75 per troy ounce on Wednesday, while crude oil for July delivery fell 1.10% to $61.35 per barrel. The USD/MXN exchange rate increased 0.15% to 19.38, indicating a slight weakening of the peso against the dollar.

The recent truce in US-China trade tensions and growing bets on Fed rate cuts have redirected global capital toward higher-yielding emerging market equities, with Mexico among the chief beneficiaries.

This capital flow, combined with attractive valuations and strong economic fundamentals, positions Mexican equities for continued strength in the near term.
