Mercedes-Benz has opened a new truck plant in Argentina, a US$110 million bet that stands out as the first ground-up auto factory there in 15 years.

A Rare New Truck Plant

Mercedes-Benz Trucks and Buses, part of Germany’s Daimler Truck group, has opened a new factory in Zarate, north of Buenos Aires. The company put the total investment at US$110 million, spread over about four years. It calls the site its most important step since the truck and bus business became a separate company in late 2021.

The plant stands out for a simple reason. It is the first auto-sector factory built from scratch in Argentina in 15 years. That makes it a notable vote of confidence at a time when the country is trying to steady its economy.

The new site replaces an older plant at Virrey del Pino that ran for decades. Daimler Truck bought the Zarate land in 2022 for about US$20 million and opened a parts depot there in 2024. The factory is the final piece of that move.

What the Plant Will Make

The factory will build Atego and Accelo trucks along with bus chassis. It also houses a remanufacturing line, which rebuilds used parts, and the company’s national parts depot. Executives described a flexible design meant to add new models over time.

The company is a clear leader in its home market. It reported a 33.4 percent share of trucks and a 61.3 percent share of buses in Argentina in 2025. It is also pushing into cleaner technology, showing an electric bus chassis at the launch.

The location matters too. The plant sits near a port used by other carmakers for trade, which helps exports. Daimler executives framed the bet on rising freight demand as Latin American economies grow.

The Defense Angle

There is a possible military dimension as well. One defense trade outlet reported that the Zarate complex could link to the Argentine Army’s plan to renew its tactical truck fleet. The hook is the Army’s purchase of more than 400 Unimog U4000 trucks.

The Unimog is a rugged utility truck used for logistics, not a combat vehicle. A local plant could in principle support that fleet through assembly, parts and servicing. The company itself has framed Zarate mainly as a civilian truck and bus hub.

So the defense tie is best read as potential rather than confirmed. It rests on the overlap between the plant’s capabilities and the Army’s needs. Any formal industrial role would have to be announced separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

What did Mercedes-Benz open in Argentina?

It opened a new truck and bus factory in Zarate, north of Buenos Aires, backed by a US$110 million investment over about four years. It is the first auto-sector plant built from the ground up in Argentina in 15 years.

What will the plant produce?

It will build Atego and Accelo trucks and bus chassis, and it runs a remanufacturing line plus the national parts depot. The company reported a 33.4 percent truck share and a 61.3 percent bus share in Argentina in 2025.

What is the defense connection?

A defense trade outlet reported the site could link to the Army’s renewal of its tactical truck fleet, tied to a purchase of more than 400 Unimog U4000 logistics trucks. The connection is a possibility, not a confirmed contract.
