Major Outage Strikes Five Provinces in Cuba’s Energy Heartland

A fault on a 220 kV transmission line between Nuevitas and Las Tunas plunged Cuba’s five eastern provinces into darkness, cutting power in Las Tunas, Holguín, Granma, Santiago de Cuba and Guantánamo.

Technicians restored Las Tunas by early Monday and worked through the morning to reconnect the remaining provinces. This marks the fifth major outage in eleven months.

In March, a Havana substation collapsed. Hurricane Rafael downed towers in October 2024. Breakdown at the Antonio Guiteras plant shut the grid island-wide twice in late 2024. Aging plants and scarce diesel leave Cuba with minimal backup capacity.

Residents grapple with unpredictable water, refrigeration and medical services. Small shops spoil food without power. Farms risk crop losses when pumps stop. Businesses lose revenue, and hospitals depend on generators.

These interruptions hurt roughly three million people in the east. Cuba’s state utility spends under three percent of GDP on power infrastructure, far below regional peers.

Limited investment means worn-out turbines and fragile transmission lines still carry most of the load. Officials send scarce fuel and parts to restart units but lack funds for major upgrades.

Behind the outages lies a deeper struggle: chronic underinvestment and reliance on imported diesel leave the grid vulnerable. Frequent blackouts erode trust in government services and push scarce foreign currency toward fuel imports instead of new plants.

To break this cycle, experts urge modernizing thermoelectric stations, diversifying energy sources and adding solar capacity to decentralize supply. Without structural reforms, Cuba’s energy woes will continue to disrupt daily life and strain its economy.
