Xodus Carnival, one of the largest costume bands in Jamaica, has set its 2027 Road March for Sunday 4 April in Kingston. Its theme for the season is REIGN, and carnival week opens with the Xodus Tailgate party on Monday 29 March. Costume packages start at US$500, a T-shirt package costs US$450, and registration is open on the band’s MasOS platform.

A carnival that comes after Easter

Most Caribbean carnivals happen before Lent, the Christian season of fasting. Trinidad and Tobago holds its big parade in February.

Jamaica does it differently. Its carnival season peaks in the week after Easter, when the island is warm and dry.

In 2027, Easter Sunday falls on 28 March. The Xodus calendar starts carnival week the next day, Easter Monday 29 March, a public holiday in Jamaica.

The week ends on Sunday 4 April with the Road March. Thousands of masqueraders, people in costume, dance through Kingston behind trucks loaded with speakers.

The Jamaica Tourist Board’s Visit Jamaica website also lists 4 April 2027 as the date of the next Road March.

Smaller carnival events take place in Ocho Rios, Montego Bay and Negril. The main Road March, though, belongs to Kingston, the capital on the south coast.

From a university campus to the streets of Kingston

Carnival reached Jamaica through the University of the West Indies at Mona, in Kingston. Students from the Eastern Caribbean brought it there from the late 1940s.

They formed steel pan groups and costume bands on campus. That student carnival still takes place every March.

The street version came later. Byron Lee, a Jamaican bandleader who had played Trinidad’s carnival for years, announced Jamaica Carnival in 1989.

The first parade took place on Sunday 22 April 1990, around Half-Way Tree in Kingston. It drew large crowds from every part of society.

Bacchanal Jamaica followed in 2000 and became the other main band. Interest faded for a while, then grew again in the late 2010s.

Xodus is one of the bands of that revival. On its website it describes 2027 as the season after a decade on the road.

What REIGN means and what it costs

Bands in Caribbean carnival design a new theme each year. Members pick a section, a group in matching costume, and parade together.

For 2027, Xodus chose REIGN, a theme of crowns, gold and jewel colours. It has 11 road sections, from Onyx and Luna to Blaze and Zahra.

Section costumes start at between US$650 and US$770, depending on the section. The Cleo monokini costumes start at US$500.

People who prefer not to wear a costume can buy the T-Shirt Package for US$450. It includes a branded shirt and shorts.

Every package includes breakfast, lunch and unlimited drinks on the road. DJs and live soca or dancehall acts play from the trucks.

Truck Access, at US$150, lets a friend ride with the band’s trucks without a costume. Envy, a VIP upgrade, costs another US$150.

How payment works

Xodus takes registrations through MasOS, an online platform used by carnival bands. The minimum deposit is US$150.

The balance is then paid in steps. The band’s schedule asks for US$250 by November, US$350 by December and US$450 by January.

The full price is due in February 2027. Costumes are collected at the Xodus Showroom at 3 Musgrave Avenue in Kingston.

Early deposits earn a discount on the final price. It falls from US$100 for deposits up to 4 October 2026 to US$25 in December.

Deposits are non-refundable and non-transferable, according to the band’s terms. A deposit without a chosen costume does not reserve a specific costume.

The showroom opens Monday to Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Visitors can try on samples there.

Carnival week, day by day

The Xodus Tailgate opens carnival week on Monday 29 March. A tailgate is an outdoor party, named after the back of a pickup truck.

The Fete Gala follows on Wednesday 31 March. A fete is a party, and this is the dressed-up night of the week.

Soca or Die takes over on Thursday 1 April. Soca is fast dance music from Trinidad and Tobago, and it drives every Caribbean carnival.

Friday 2 April brings three events: Xodus Wet, Lost in Paradise and Bacchanal J’ouvert. J’ouvert is a pre-dawn street party with paint and powder.

Xodus has not yet published start times or prices for these parties. They are sold through CaribTix in Jamaican dollars, in early-bird and later tiers.

The band also lists a Remedy recovery session for carnival week, without a date so far.

Road March Sunday

The Road March on Sunday 4 April begins from 8 a.m. Jamaica time, according to the Xodus events page. Jamaica does not change its clocks for summer.

Only people with a costume package, a T-shirt package or Truck Access can march inside the band.

Xodus has not yet published the 2027 route. Its Road March day guide, with call time and route, is still being prepared.

Recent parades used the wide roads of New Kingston, the business district. In 2022, Xodus and Bacchanal shared a route along Hope Road and Trafalgar Road.

Spectators line those streets for free. Watching from the roadside is the easiest way to see carnival without spending on a package.

Getting there and getting around

Kingston is served by Norman Manley International Airport, code KIN. It sits on the Palisadoes, a narrow strip of land across the harbour from the city.

Many visitors stay in New Kingston, close to recent routes. Xodus says it will announce partner hotel rates to its mailing list.

Early April in Kingston is usually hot and sunny. Revellers carry water, sunscreen and comfortable shoes for a long day on hot asphalt.

Licensed taxis in Jamaica carry red number plates. Expect road closures along the route on parade day.

Carnival crowds are cheerful but dense. Most visitors carry a phone, a card and a little cash, and leave the rest at the hotel.

What it means for a visitor

Carnival in Jamaica mixes Trinidad’s soca with Jamaica’s own dancehall and reggae. That blend gives it a sound unlike other Caribbean carnivals.

For newcomers to the island, the week offers a quick way into Kingston’s social life.

It is also a real cost. A costume, flights and a hotel for carnival week add up to a large budget for most people.

The spectrum runs from free roadside watching to a full costume with VIP extras. Each visitor can choose a place on it.

The date is set, and the band’s plans will fill in over the coming months.
