Key Facts

The project. HDF Energy is advancing a solar plant of more than 160 megawatts in Jamaica, combined with battery and hydrogen storage.

The developer. France’s Hydrogène de France, listed in Paris, through its Barbados-based Caribbean arm.

The stage. It secured greenfield land in April 2026 and has begun environmental and grid studies.

The goal. The plant would support Jamaica’s target of 50% renewable energy by 2030.

The scale. If built, it would rank among the largest renewable-energy developments proposed for Jamaica.

Jamaica could get one of its biggest clean-energy projects yet. France’s HDF Energy has secured land for a HDF Energy Jamaica solar plant paired with hydrogen and battery storage.

Jamaica, like much of the Caribbean, relies heavily on imported fuel for its electricity, which makes power expensive and vulnerable to price swings. Clean energy is the way out, and a French company wants to help build it.

HDF Energy, a hydrogen-infrastructure specialist listed in Paris, is developing a large solar project on the island.

Solar Plus Storage

The plant would pair solar panels with peak capacity of more than 160 megawatts with battery storage and hydrogen storage, a combination designed to deliver power even when the sun is not shining.

It is being led by HDF Energy Caribbean Holdings, the Barbados-based regional arm of Hydrogène de France.

Still Early Days

The company secured greenfield land suitable for the project in April 2026 and has started a preliminary environmental and social assessment, with a grid study planned to test whether the plant can safely connect to Jamaica’s network.

It has also invited contractors, suppliers, operators and investors to signal their interest, an early step before construction.

Why It Matters

The project would advance Jamaica’s goal of generating half its electricity from renewables by 2030, cutting reliance on imported fuel.

For the wider Caribbean, a large solar-plus-hydrogen plant would be a showcase for how small island grids can store clean power and steady their supply.
