Irani’s Q4 2024 Profit Soars on Tax Break, Yet Annual Decline Raises Questions

Irani Papel e Embalagem S.A. (RANI3) released its Q4 2024 earnings on February 21, 2025. The Brazilian paper and packaging firm posted a striking R$ 186 million net profit, up 2,524% from R$ 7.1 million in Q4 2023.

A R$ 168.2 million tax credit, tied to excluding ICMS from taxable income, fueled this surge. This one-time boost overshadows a tougher reality. Recurring profit dropped 30.4% to R$ 17.9 million, missing market forecasts of R$ 25-30 million.

For 2024, net profit fell 20.6% to R$ 304.5 million from R$ 383.4 million, while recurring results plummeted 44.8%. Shares dipped 2% by 10:20 AM, reflecting investor unease.

In addition, revenue offers a brighter spot. Q4 sales hit R$ 424 million, up 10.1% from R$ 385 million, lifting the yearly total to R$ 1.627 billion, a 2.1% rise. Growth stemmed from strong packaging sales, up 5.7%, outpacing Brazil’s 4.8% sector increase, per Empapel.

However, EBITDA slipped 3% to R$ 475.7 million, squeezed by a 73.1% spike in raw material costs after regional flooding. Irani’s story blends resilience with challenges. The Gaia II Project, part of a R$ 1.2 billion upgrade, drives sales volume and efficiency.

Balancing Challenges with Growth Ambitions

Yet, rising costs and a high 11.3% debt cost test its margins. The firm holds a 2.26x net debt-to-EBITDA ratio, staying within its 2.5x target. Context matters here.

Brazil’s packaging sector, valued at R$ 144.4 billion in 2023, faces raw material volatility and a tough economy. Irani, the only listed pure-play packaging firm, lags peers like Suzano (+7.65%) and Klabin (+16.3%), with its stock down 34.47% in 2024.

Still, analysts see potential, pegging its 2025 EV/EBITDA at 4.7x, below the 6x norm. The numbers reveal a dual narrative. A tax windfall masks operational struggles, but revenue growth signals staying power.

Irani aims to climb to Brazil’s third-largest packaging producer, leveraging sustainability and capacity. Investors now watch if it can turn investments into steady profits amid a rocky market.
