India Seeks Petrobras Expertise for Deepwater Oil Exploration

India aims to collaborate with Petrobras, Brazil’s state-owned oil company, for deepwater oil exploration off its coast. This initiative emerged as the main focus of Indian Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri’s visit to Brazil in September.

During his trip, Puri met with Petrobras President Magda Chambriard to discuss potential cooperation. Puri revealed in an interview that Indian companies want to leverage Petrobras’ expertise gained from pre-salt exploration.

He described his initial conversation with Chambriard as “very positive,” hinting at future partnerships in exploratory projects. The minister emphasized the ongoing energy cooperation between India and Brazil.

India’s vast sedimentary basin, spanning about 3.5 million square kilometers, presents significant opportunities. The country recently opened up 1 million square kilometers for exploration in a previously restricted area.

India’s Energy Transition

Puri extended an invitation to Petrobras, seeking technical knowledge and potential partnerships with Indian firms. Energy demand in India is growing at a rate three times the global average.

Currently, imports account for 85% of the country’s domestic consumption. Brazil ranks as the 12th largest oil supplier to India. The Indian government aims to achieve energy self-sufficiency in the medium to long term.

Puri acknowledged India‘s commitment to energy transition but stressed the need to balance it with current energy requirements. With a population of 1.4 billion, India has set a net-zero CO2 emission target for 2070.

The country is implementing measures to promote renewable energy, including increasing ethanol blending in gasoline and green hydrogen initiatives. India plans to double its solar and wind energy generation capacity in the next decade.

The goal is to reduce coal usage and derive 50% of energy consumption from renewable sources. However, the country still possesses large coal reserves and faces challenges in completely abandoning cheaper, polluting sources.

Puri adopted a pragmatic stance, highlighting the potential political consequences of energy scarcity. He emphasized the need for a gradual transition to green energy, considering the impact on India’s large voting population and democratic processes.

The minister’s visit underscores India’s interest in Petrobras’ deepwater exploration expertise. This collaboration could potentially reshape India’s energy landscape and strengthen ties between the two nations in the oil and gas sector.
