Ibovespa Suffers 3% Drop in May Amid Fiscal Concerns and Central Bank Changes

May was tough for Brazil’s primary stock index, the Ibovespa, which dropped 3.04%, bringing its annual loss to 9.01%.

Throughout 2024, Ibovespa has felt the impact of foreign investment withdrawal, primarily due to the rising U.S. interest rates.

Initially, strong U.S. economic indicators led markets to expect several rate cuts by the Federal Reserve.

Despite these global headwinds, there was a slight recovery in foreign investments into Brazil’s stock exchange, B3, with a net positive inflow of R$892.9 ($173) million by late May.

These floods are expected to impact Brazil’s GDP in 2024 and could worsen fiscal challenges through reduced tax collections and increased government spending on disaster responses.

Rising interest rates, uncertain inflation, and potential economic slowdowns elevate the “Brazil risk” by 2024’s end.
