Ibovespa Falters as Commodity Prices Drop and Political Risk Weighs

The Ibovespa index finished the September 3, 2025 session at 139,863.63, down 0.34% for its third straight daily loss, according to the official trading close.

The volatility in São Paulo tracked declines across major oil stocks and a renewed focus on Brazil’s domestic challenges, as illustrated in publicly available TradingView and B3 data.

Petrobras again played a major role, dropping nearly 1% in sync with a broad selloff in global crude. The Brent oil contract for November closed down 2.23% at $67.60 per barrel, dragging the energy sector lower.

Brava Energia faced the steepest decline, falling 2.97%. Real estate insurer IRB Brasil lost 2.24%, while drinks giant Ambev dropped 2.14%.

Joining the biggest losers, retailer Sendas Distribuidora fell 4.98% and retailer Magazine Luiza slipped 4.27% as consumption stocks underperformed. The session’s five biggest losers came from both the oil shock and structural weaknesses in the consumption names.

On the positive side, Cosan emerged as the top gainer with an 8% jump. Raízen, a joint venture partially controlled by Cosan, surged 4.96% as speculation mounted over upcoming asset sales. Shares in Companhia Brasileira de Distribuição rose 2.93%.

Localiza and CPFL Energia rounded out the top five winners, both buoyed by sector-specific catalysts including fleet expansion expectations and regulatory approvals, respectively.

Total trading volumes on B3 remained in line with recent averages, while no dramatic ETF inflow or outflow shifts surfaced.

The local industrial sector offered little encouragement, with July’s production dropping by 0.2%, reflecting the constraining effect of Brazil’s benchmark rate holding at 15% per year.

Globally, markets reflected similar caution. In the US, mixed economic data pushed the S&P 500 and Nasdaq higher, while the Dow slipped.

European equities finished stronger, led by speculation around fiscal and political developments, while Asian indexes fell on trade concerns.

Technical indicators from the official day and 4-hour charts showed the Ibovespa backing away from resistance near 142,000. The MACD displayed dissipating bullish momentum.

The RSI hovered around 59.7 on the daily and 56.7 on the 4-hour chart, showing the index above oversold but firmly in a corrective phase. The Global Liquidity Index, traced in yellow on the 4-hour view, signaled flattening short-term inflows.

These simultaneous pressures from falling commodity prices, high local borrowing costs, and unresolved political risk channeled capital into defensive positions while investors awaited clearer signals for market direction.
