What it is

Gundam is a Japanese science-fiction franchise built around piloted giant robots. It began as a television series in 1979 and grew into a model-kit industry.

Those kits are called Gunpla, short for Gundam plastic model. Building them is the hobby, and it has a large following in Mexico.

The Gundam Summer Event is the third edition of a Mexico City gathering that started in 2024. It is part shop, part workshop.

Do not confuse it with the Gundam Base pop-up store that visited Polanco. This is a separate, larger event.

When and where

The Gundam Summer Event runs Friday 21 to Sunday 23 August, from 10:00 to 19:00 each day. Workshops run 10:30 to 18:30.

The venue is Frontón Bucareli, at Bucareli 118 in Colonia Centro. That is in the Cuauhtémoc borough, in the heart of the city.

Metro Juárez on Line 3 and Balderas on Lines 1 and 3 are both walkable. Metrobús runs along nearby Paseo de la Reforma.

It is a central, easy address. That is a change from conventions held out at Expo Santa Fe.

What entry actually costs

Nothing. Mexican coverage is consistent that entry is free, with the wording entrada libre and cupo limitado.

Capacity is capped, though no number has been published. Reports put expected attendance at around 6,000 across the three days.

On registration the sources disagree. Two outlets describe signing in at the door, and three describe simply walking in.

No official registration form or link has appeared anywhere. Treat the door process as unconfirmed and arrive with time in hand.

What is actually on show

The Gundam Summer Event is a retail and workshop event rather than a museum exhibition. No statue of any size has been announced.

Free assembly workshops run through the day, and every attendee is promised a kit. That is the reason to arrive early.

Several limited-edition Gunpla are sold only here. The announced list includes clear-finish versions of the Sazabi, Wing Gundam Zero and Mighty Strike Freedom.

There are also Banpresto figures, Ichiban Kuji prize draws and gashapon capsule machines. A recycling station takes plastic runners and capsules for a charity collection.

Who is behind it

Mexican coverage attributes the Gundam Summer Event to Bandai Namco, the Japanese company behind the franchise. No local distributor has been named.

We could not reach an official company page confirming the Mexico City dates. Every source we found is Mexican entertainment media.

That is worth stating plainly. The dates and venue are consistent across six outlets, but none of them is the organiser.

Why Gunpla is big in Mexico

Mexico has one of the largest Gundam followings outside Asia. Local build competitions and hobby shops have grown steadily over the past decade.

Free events like this one are how the brand keeps that base. Give away a starter kit and some of those builders come back for the expensive ones.

It also fits a wider pattern in the capital. Japanese pop culture has moved from niche conventions into central, mainstream venues.

For a foreign resident, that is the useful observation. Events like this are now easy to reach without a car.

Is it worth going if you know nothing about Gundam

Probably, if you like making things with your hands. The workshops assume no knowledge and the kits are snap-fit rather than glued.

Children who can manage small parts will be fine. The programming is in Spanish.

For anyone with a passing interest in Japanese pop culture, three free hours in the Centro is a low-risk afternoon.

Serious collectors are the ones who need to arrive at ten. The limited kits are what sells out.

What is not confirmed

There is no published capacity number and no official ticket or registration system. Both matter if you are travelling across the city.

There is no announced statue, and no list of guest builders or competitions. The programme detail beyond the workshops is thin.

And no primary source from the organiser has surfaced. If the plan hinges on this event, check on the day.
