Formal Job Creation in November Reaches Highest Level Since 2010

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Benefiting from trade and services, the creation of jobs with a signed worker’s registry reached its eighth consecutive month of growth in November.

According to data released by the General Registry of Employees and Unemployed (CAGED), of the Secretariat of Labor of the Ministry of the Economy, a net 99,232 formal jobs were created in the past month. The indicator measures the difference between hirings and dismissals.

This was the best rate of job openings for November since 2010, when hiring exceeded layoffs by 138,247. Job creation totaled 948,344 from January to November, 10.5 percent more than the same period last year.

Job creation reached the highest level for the first 11 months of the year since 2013, when 1,546,999 jobs had been opened in the accumulated 11 months.

Despite the rise, job creation in November was concentrated in a few sectors. In the breakdown by branch of activity, only three of the eight sectors surveyed created formal jobs in the last month. The leader was trade, with 106,834 jobs opened, followed by services (44,287 jobs). Ranking third were industrial public utilities, a category that encompasses energy and sanitation (419 posts).

The employment rate fell in the processing industry (-24,815 jobs), in agriculture (-19,161 jobs) and in construction (-7,390 jobs). Public administration closed 652 posts, and the mineral extraction industry closed 290 formal posts.

Job generation in November is usually marked by reinforcement in trade for year-end hiring. However, the industry, which reinforced production in August and September because of Christmas, is slowing down. Agriculture and cattle raising also dismisses employees because of the inter-harvest period for several products, such as sugarcane.

Highlights

In commerce, job creation was boosted by the retail segment, with the opening of 100,393 formal jobs. The wholesale trade generated the opening of 6,441 jobs. In services, the highlights were property sales and administration (30,695 posts), accommodation, food, repair and maintenance services (15,839 posts) and medical, dental and veterinary services (4,786 posts).

In the manufacturing industry, the chemical, pharmaceutical, veterinary and perfume industries (-7,140 posts); food and beverage products (-7,040 posts); textile and clothing (-5,309 posts) and the footwear industry (-2,399 posts) pulled down employment.
