Financial Sector Leads Unprecedented Dividend Payouts in Brazilian Market
The Brazilian stock market has witnessed a remarkable phenomenon in 2024. Ten companies listed on the Ibovespa index have distributed record-breaking dividends between January and September.
This surge in payouts has reshaped the landscape of shareholder returns in Brazil. The financial sector has emerged as the frontrunner in this dividend boom.
Four out of the ten companies that broke their own dividend records belong to this sector. Itaú Unibanco stands out with an impressive payout of R$ 21.4 billion ($3.69 billion) up to September.
Over the past five years, the bank has distributed a total of R$ 57.09 billion ($9.84 billion) in dividends. BTG Pactual has also made significant strides.
The bank distributed R$ 2.99 billion ($515.52 million) in dividends, solidifying its position as a key player in the market. This growth reflects the financial sector’s ability to generate value for shareholders even in challenging economic times.
Other sectors have also shown remarkable consistency in dividend payments. In the strategic oil and gas sector, Cosan distributed R$ 2.7 billion ($465.52 million) in dividends in 2024.
Record-Setting Dividends Across Key Sectors
The industrial goods sector saw Weg surprising investors with a payout of R$ 2.9 billion ($500 million), its highest in recent years. An unexpected performer was Vivara, a jewelry company in the cyclical consumer goods sector.
It paid out R$ 88 million ($15.17 million) in dividends this year, surpassing its previous years’ figures since 2020. This consistency is noteworthy in a sector typically sensitive to economic fluctuations.
Collectively, these ten companies have paid out R$ 42.9 billion ($7.40 billion) so far. This amount represents 22% of the total dividends distributed by all companies listed on the Ibovespa.
The percentage is higher than in previous years, indicating the positive impact of these record payouts on the market. It’s crucial to note that these figures represent actual cash outflows to shareholders.
They are not merely provisions in financial statements. This distinction is vital for understanding the true liquidity of each company. Sector-wise, the financial industry leads with 30 companies paying a total of R$ 67.7 billion ($11.67 billion) up to September.
A Year of Record-Breaking Payouts
This figure surpasses any annual total in the sector’s history. The industrial goods sector, comprising 22 companies, distributed R$ 7.44 billion ($1.28 billion) in nine months, also setting a new record.
Other sectors maintained significant performances. The utility sector distributed R$ 26.2 billion ($4.52 billion) up to September 2024, about 70% of its annual record set in 2021.
The oil, gas, and biofuels sector leads the five-year cumulative total with R$ 457.8 billion ($78.93 billion) paid out. Petrobras dominates this sector, accounting for R$ 439.3 billion ($75.74 billion) of the total.
The year 2024 has already made history in the Brazilian dividend market. The financial and industrial goods sectors have shown strength and recovery capacity. Meanwhile, the oil sector maintains its strategic relevance, led by Petrobras.
The resilience of all 156 companies that have consistently paid dividends over the past five years is noteworthy. From January to September, these companies disbursed R$ 213.8 billion ($36.86 billion), or 77.4% of their total 2023 payout.
Dividends continue to serve as a reliable indicator of company performance and value creation for shareholders. The figures presented so far paint an optimistic picture for the remainder of the year in the Brazilian stock market.
