Embraer Lands One of Its Largest Jet Orders as SAS Bets Big on Fleet Renewal
Brazilian aircraft maker Embraer has secured a R$21.8 billion ($4 billion) order from Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) for 45 E195-E2 jets, with purchase rights for 10 more.
SAS and Embraer announced the deal on July 1, 2025, marking the largest direct aircraft order SAS has made since 1996 and one of the largest orders Embraer has ever received for this model.
The first E195-E2 jets will arrive at SAS in late 2027, with the rest delivered over four years. SAS will use the new aircraft to replace older planes, aiming to cut fuel costs and meet stricter environmental rules.
The E195-E2 seats up to 146 passengers and uses about 25% less fuel than previous generation jets. The aircraft is certified to fly on up to 50% sustainable aviation fuel, with Embraer working toward 100% certification.
This order places SAS among the top buyers of the E195-E2 worldwide. Only Porter Airlines of Canada and Azul Brazilian Airlines have placed similar or slightly larger orders for this model.
For Embraer, the SAS deal is a clear sign of strong demand for its next-generation regional jets and strengthens its position in the global market. Embraer reported a sharp rise in deliveries this year.
Embraer-SAS Deal Signals Shift in Regional Aviation
In the second quarter of 2025, it delivered 61 aircraft—up 30% from the same period last year. The company expects to deliver up to 85 commercial jets in 2025, reflecting robust interest from airlines looking to modernize fleets and control costs.
For SAS, the deal is central to its plan to refresh its fleet and improve efficiency. The new jets will serve routes across Scandinavia and Europe from the airline’s Copenhagen hub.
By investing in modern aircraft, SAS aims to stay competitive and adapt to changing market conditions, including higher fuel prices and tougher emissions standards.
The agreement highlights a trend in the airline industry: carriers are investing in new, more efficient planes to manage costs and comply with environmental regulations.
Embraer’s win with SAS shows its growing influence in regional aviation, while SAS positions itself for the future of European air travel. The deal also sets a clear example for other airlines under pressure to renew their fleets and operate more sustainably.
