Migrant goes viral explaining why he wants to move from well-off Chile back to crisis-stricken Venezuela

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – A young man with Venezuelan nationality posted a video on his TikTok account that quickly went viral, in which he explains his reasons for leaving Chile.

This is the user @klebertbook, who made the well-known challenge, which is to explain why he would return to his country.

It didn’t take long for the video to go viral on TikTok. There were thousands of comments from followers.

The viral TikTok video, explains the reasons for leaving Chile.

“The first reason is that the cost of living in Chile has gone up. Today you need about 8 dollars and more for a kilo of prime beef, cheese, for example, costs almost 10 dollars and more here in Chile, not to mention everything basic, oil, eggs, and all that,” the young man says in the clip.

He added, “Rents are exorbitantly expensive. An average person here pays between 200,000 and 500,000 pesos, which in dollars is equivalent to between US$350 and US$600.

He also explained that “the cost of gasoline has increased, it is now about US$1.5 per liter (US$5.50 per gallon), in other words, what is one liter here covers three liters of gasoline there, if you pay the international price.”

Venezuela still has one of the cheapest fuels in the world today.

Finally, he added, “I earn my money through the Internet, so if I earn US$500 to US$1,000, this means nothing here in Chile. On the other hand, in Venezuela, with this kind of money I have my own house, and I can cover all my basic needs with that. Of course, I can earn 500, 600 or even 1,000 dollars, but here in Chile, you basically have to spend a million pesos (US$1,100) to live relatively well (…).

He added, “Rents are exorbitantly expensive. An average person here pays between 250,000 and 400,000 pesos without utilities which in dollars is between US$350 and US$600.

He also explained that “the cost of gasoline has increased, it is now about 1.5 dollars per liter (US$5.50 per gallon), in other words, what is one liter here covers three liters of gasoline there, if you pay the international price.”

Finally, he added, “I earn my money through the Internet, so if I earn US$500 to US$1,000, which is nothing here in Chile. On the other hand, in Venezuela, with this kind of money, I have my own house and can cover my basic needs. Of course, here in Chile you basically have to spend a million pesos (US$1,100) to live relatively well (…).”
