Cuba increases validity of national passports

The Cuban government announced today, Tuesday, the extension of the validity of national passports up to 10 years “as part of the periodic updating” of the Caribbean country’s migratory policy.

The general director of Consular Affairs and Attention to Cubans Living Abroad of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ernesto Soberón, also informed about eliminating the extension of Cuban passports and reducing the cost of the documents when they are processed abroad.

According to the announcement, as of next July 1, the conventional passport will extend its validity from the current six years to 10 years in the case of Cubans aged 16 or older and to five years for minors.

On that date, the requirement to extend the document every two years will also be eliminated, and the cost of consular procedures associated with passports will be reduced to 180 dollars or euros for those over 16 years of age, as well as to 140 dollars or euros for those under that age.

As of July 1, Cubans living abroad will also be able to stay longer in Cuba, as well as their foreign relatives, since currently, those periods of stay are different.

People who emigrated before January 1, 1971, must present a Cuban passport to enter the country, by the provisions of the new Constitution, approved in 2019.

“We reiterate, once again, the will of our government to continue implementing, in an invariable manner, the policy of strengthening ties with our nationals abroad,” Soberón stressed.
