Who the five men are

The only Costa Rican by birth is Farid Alberto Morales Araya, 40, known as “Beto”. Police arrested him in May 2025 with what CRHoy calls the largest synthetic drug seizure in the country’s history.

Colombian national José Franklin Cuesta was arrested in the same operation and handled logistics, CRHoy reported. Their case involved 48 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine found in two vehicles.

The other three were caught on 1 June 2025 in central San José with 70 kilograms of cocaine. They are Andrés Felipe Restrepo Uribe, a naturalised Costa Rican, and Colombian Luis Alberto Sinisterra Lozano.

The third man is named Freddy Sánchez Chavarro, a Venezuelan, by CRHoy. Teletica names him John Fredy Sánchez Chavarría and counts four Colombians in the group.

How the undercover cases worked

Both cases began with intelligence from the DEA, passed to Costa Rica’s Attorney General’s Office. The Drug Control Police (PCD) then ran undercover purchases.

In the meth case, agents first bought one kilogram for US$3,800, CRHoy reported. The bigger delivery was intercepted in Tibás and San Francisco de Dos Ríos.

In the cocaine case, the drugs were hidden in a modified compartment under a car’s front seats. Agents had also made a one-kilogram trial purchase the day before.

The legal path to Thursday

A US federal court in the Middle District of Florida requested Morales on 19 December 2025. The San José Criminal Court authorised his surrender on 14 August 2026, CRHoy reported.

The US Embassy filed its request for the cocaine group on 26 September 2025. An appeals court in Goicoechea upheld that extradition on 19 August 2026.

Authorities stressed that extradition is not a conviction, Teletica reported. The five will face charges of conspiracy and international drug trafficking in Florida.

A steady pattern of handovers

With this flight, Costa Rica extradites five people as its third group sent to the United States this year. Monumental reported this, citing acting Attorney General Karen Valverde. Former minister Celso Gamboa and Edwin López went on 20 March.

Gilbert Bell, alias “Macho Coca”, and Gabriel Lozano followed in August. Earlier this year police also arrested a Costa Rican club president in a US drug case.

Vice Minister of Public Security Nelson Barquero called Thursday’s handover a “forceful message” to trafficking gangs. Diario Extra quoted him on Thursday.

It is the first extradition built on cases run by Executive Branch police units, Diario Extra reported. The rise in drug violence is covered in Costa Rica’s safe-haven myth meets a new era of violence.

What Is Not Yet Known

The Florida indictments have not been made public, so the exact counts and possible sentences are unclear. No court dates in Florida have been announced.

Reports differ on the fifth man’s name and nationality, and on whether the meth haul was 48 or 49 kilograms. CRHoy’s higher figure appears to include the one-kilogram undercover purchase.
