Constitutional complaint filed against Peru’s former prime minister

The Public Prosecutor’s Office of Peru has filed a constitutional complaint against former Prime Minister Betssy Chávez for the alleged crimes of influence peddling, negotiations incompatible with the position, or illicit enrichment.

According to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the accusation is due to the alleged irregular hiring of personnel by Chávez – the last head of government of former president Pedro Castillo – in her capacity as minister and congresswoman, according to América Televisión.

Allegedly, the former Prime Minister would have benefited at least two relatives of a man with whom she was romantically linked in November last year while she was head of the Ministry of Culture.

The Peruvian Congress already approved at the end of March to constitutionally denounce Chávez for the alleged crimes of rebellion and conspiracy in the alleged coup d’état of former President Castillo, who in December tried to dissolve the Parliament and declare a government of exception.

That maneuver led to the dismissal and arrest of Castillo, causing the ascension to the Presidency of Dina Boluarte, who until then had been his “number two”.

Since then, Peru has been the scene of intense anti-government protests in which around 70 people have died.
