Peru: former president Pedro Castillo’s communication limited for 15 days

The National Penitentiary Institute (INPE) of Peru has imposed a disciplinary sanction limiting the external communication of former president Pedro Castillo after he published in January a letter on the social network Twitter in which he claimed to be a “political prisoner” of the Government of Dina Boluarte.

The INPE has indicated that on January 26, 2023, it initiated an administrative disciplinary proceeding against Castillo “for the commission of an alleged disciplinary offense.”

“Once the administrative disciplinary process was completed, the Technical Penitentiary Council of the Barbadillo penitentiary establishment – where he is being held – decided to impose the disciplinary sanction of limiting communications with the outside for 15 days,” reads a statement.

The agency has specified that this measure implies restricting visits from family and friends during this period.

However, “it does not prevent the entry of his lawyers in the exercise of his right to defense nor his participation in jurisdictional hearings”.

In addition, the former president has another administrative disciplinary process against him, announced in February after being interviewed by Spanish media from prison.
