Colombia’s Inflation Edges Higher Again in September — And Why It’s Sticking Around

Colombia is set to notch a third straight monthly rise in inflation, with September’s consumer-price reading seen hovering near 5.1 percent year over year and roughly 0.3 percent month on month.

That keeps price growth uncomfortably steady heading into the final quarter of 2025, rather than gliding lower as policymakers had hoped.

The headline story is food. Prices for beef and chicken have crept up, while perishables such as plantain and yuca have been pricier after transport disruptions. Eating out has also become costlier as restaurants pass along higher payroll bills.

Education-related fees typically add seasonal weight in September. These forces together have outweighed the relief coming from public utilities, whose contribution to inflation has faded compared with earlier in the year.

The story behind the story sits one step upstream. Producer prices jumped 0.51 percent in September, led by agriculture. When farm-gate and wholesale costs rise, supermarket shelves usually follow with a lag.

That pipeline pressure helps explain why forecasters think inflation could hover around five percent through year-end, even if the monthly increases look modest on paper.

Sticky Inflation Delays Colombia’s Rate Cuts

Monetary policy is caught in the middle. The central bank kept its benchmark rate at 9.25 percent late last month, signaling caution on cutting too quickly while inflation remains sticky.

Markets still expect price growth to ease in 2026, but a big wild card looms: wage negotiations for 2026, which can ripple across rents and service prices via indexation.

Why this matters beyond Colombia: a stickier inflation path narrows the room for rate cuts, keeping local borrowing costs elevated and tempering consumer demand in one of Latin America’s larger economies.

It also influences the peso’s trajectory and cross-border investor appetite for Colombian bonds and equities. In short, today’s print is not just a statistic—it’s a signal about how quickly Colombia can pivot from stabilization to growth.
