Coffee, Gold, and Oil: Key Insights to Monitor This Week

As investors await signs regarding the Federal Reserve’s interest rate cut schedule, gold prices are reaching new highs.

Meanwhile, coffee is surging, and the previously dramatic fluctuations in oil prices have settled to levels last seen in 2015.

Starbucks’ favorite Arabica coffee bean is near record highs due to a scarcity of the cheaper robusta bean.

Here are five significant insights to consider in the global commodities markets this week:

Coffee

Premium Arabica coffee futures, favored by cafes like Starbucks Corporation (SBUX), remain close to their 2022 peaks due to a shortage of the cheaper robusta bean.

This shortage has boosted demand for Arabica, with prices increasing by over 30% this year.

Concerns are also emerging about Brazil’s Arabica production, as dry weather late last year harmed crop development, resulting in smaller beans.

The price of robusta, used in instant coffee beverages, is at its highest since 2008.

Palm Oil

Malaysia’s palm oil stocks are piling up as exports from the world’s second-largest producer plummeted last month, pushing down the prices of the world’s most consumed edible oil.

Inventories rose 4.4% in June from the previous month, reaching their highest level since February. Futures traded in Kuala Lumpur experienced their worst weekly loss since mid-April.

This downturn was driven by concerns over rising stock levels and competition from abundant soybean oil supplies originating from South America and the United States

Gold

Gold is flirting with a new record high as investors increase their bets that cooling inflation will eventually lead to lower interest rates in the United States.

Last week, spot gold approached its all-time high of $2,450.07 per ounce, rising as economic data supported speculation that the Fed might soon proceed with rate cuts.

Lower interest rates generally benefit non-interest-bearing gold. Central bank purchases and rising investor interest, especially in China, have bolstered the metal’s price.

Demand for a safe haven amid rising geopolitical tensions has also contributed to its rise.

Oil

The indicator of oil market volatility has dropped to its lowest level since June 2015. Persistent global geopolitical risks are being offset by concerns that economic growth could weaken.

Brent crude futures, the international benchmark, have fluctuated within a $15 per barrel range since February.

As perceptions grow that prices are less likely to see significant rallies or sell-offs, the demand for protection through options has decreased.

Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)

The freezing of new LNG permit approvals by U.S. President Joe Biden has had a chilling effect on LNG deal-making in the U.S.

This contrasts with the long-term deal boom that followed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in early 2022.

Building export projects requires billions of dollars in investment, and for most promoters, securing these contracts is essential for attracting financing.

As the leading global LNG exporter, the future number of U.S. projects and the ability to send exports to key European and Asian markets will depend on political will.

The outcomes of the U.S. elections in November will also be crucial in shaping these developments.
