Bolsonaro’s health deteriorates; he is transferred from Brasilia to São Paulo

By · July 14, 2021 · 2 min read

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – President Jair Bolsonaro will be transferred to São Paulo and may undergo emergency surgery, the Special Secretariat of Social Communication (Secom) said on Wednesday.

The president was examined by his private doctor, Antonio Luiz Macedo, at the Armed Forces Hospital (HFA), where he has been hospitalized since early morning. He has been suffering from hiccups for more than ten days and felt severe abdominal pains early this morning.

Macedo, who operated on the president after the knife attack he suffered during the 2018 election campaign, traveled to Brasilia to assess Bolsonaro’s health condition.

According to interlocutors at the Planalto Palace, Bolsonaro felt severe pain in the abdominal region during the early morning hours and was taken before dawn to the Armed Forces Hospital (HFA), where he remains hospitalized.

If confirmed, this would be Bolsonaro’s seventh surgery after the 2018 attack, four of which were directly related to the stabbing. He also underwent a vasectomy and another procedure to remove kidney stones.

An interlocutor of the President told Valor magazine that he was more animated in the late morning. Medicated, he wanted to participate in a meeting between the heads of the three branches of government, scheduled for 11 am today at the headquarters of the Supreme Court (STF). He was, however, dissuaded from the idea by aides, worried about his health condition.

Bolsonaro had been suffering for more than ten days with a hiccup crisis and should be under observation for up to 48 hours, “not necessarily in the hospital,” said the Planalto Palace in a statement. According to the Presidential Palace, Bolsonaro “is in good spirits and is doing well.

Also, in a statement, the Supreme confirmed the cancellation of the meeting and said that “the meeting will be rescheduled in due course”.
