Brazilian Spending Abroad Rebounds in June, Compared with Last Year

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – After dropping significantly in May, Brazilian spending abroad increased again in June and totaled US$1.524 billion (R$6.096 billion). The figure represents a 2.5 percent increase in comparison to what was spent on travel abroad in the same month last year, the Central Bank reported on Thursday, July 25th. In June 2018, Brazilian spending abroad totaled US$1.487 billion.

Compared to the same month last year, Brazilians’ spending on trips abroad have been declining since June 2018.

In the first half of the year, Brazilian spending abroad totaled US$8.807 billion. As a result, there was an eight percent decline in comparison to the same period last year, when Brazilian spending abroad totaled US$9.573 billion.

Foreign spending in Brazil

According to the Central Bank, foreigners spent US$374 million in Brazil in June this year, dropping slightly from the level recorded in the same month in 2018 (US$379 million).

Foreign spending in Brazil in the first six months of 2019 totaled US$3.076 billion, compared to US$3.240 billion over the same period last year, reported the institution.
