Brazilian Marines to receive four Oshkosh 4×4 JLTV armored vehicles in October

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Admiral Rogério Ramos Lage, commander of Brazilian Marine Corps Materiel, confirmed the delivery of the first four Oshkosh 4×4 JLTV armored vehicles by October 2022, out of a total order of 12 units whose deliveries will be four vehicles per year until 2024. The announcement was made during the presentation of the Marine Corps Rapid Reaction Force Tier Three capabilities in service of the United Nations (UN).

According to Fleet Marine Corps Fleet Force Commander Admiral Carlos Chagas Vianna Braga, “these JLTVs will play an important role in peacekeeping or law and order missions, due to their high mobility and maneuverability in restricted spaces that larger armored vehicles do not have, and they also add important competencies to the Marine Corps’ existing pool of wheeled vehicles in the execution of its combat missions as a sea-to-shore force.”

The first contract to acquire 12 units was signed in October 2020. Still, according to statements from the Brazilian Admiralty, plans for the JLTV in the Brazilian Marine Corps reach a planned fleet of 48 examples to be acquired over the next eight years within the Pro AD SUMUS Program.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE OSHKOSH DEFENSE JLTV

The Oshkosh L-ATV (Light Combat Tactical All-Terrain Vehicle) is a combat utility vehicle developed by Oshkosh Defense from the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) program for the United States Armed Forces.

It was developed to replace the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) as the primary utility vehicle for the U.S. Army and Marine Corps.

The vehicle was developed using innovative technologies proven in Iraq and Afghanistan over the past ten years. Performance characteristics have been verified through extensive mission profile testing.

The basic L-ATV does not come with a standard weapons configuration. It can be mounted with a variety of remotely controlled weapon stations. The turret can be equipped with a 7.62 or 12.7 mm machine gun. Armament configurations vary according to the purchasing customer’s requirements.

The L-ATV is equipped with an advanced crew protection system, which offers a similar level of protection to mine-resistant, ambush-protected vehicles (MRAP).

The system can withstand explosions on the underside of the chassis. The L-ATV can accept additional armor packages to operate according to mission requirements. The standard vehicle is equipped with a diesel engine that supplies heavy-duty electric generator power.

The powertrain solution offers increased fuel economy and allows the vehicle to generate 70 kW onboard and export power, serving as a power supply station in the field.

The L-ATV is equipped with an intelligent TAK-4i independent suspension system, which offers high mobility and maneuverability to the vehicle. The system has been specially designed for light and high-performance vehicles, providing high mobility in rough off-road terrain.

The suspension is coil-sprung and offers 20 inches of travel, 25% more than any vehicle currently used by the U.S. military. The system can be raised and lowered via internal controls.

The TAK-4i suspension system improves ride quality and load-carrying capability while reducing life-cycle costs.

The L-ATV’s compact design and dimensions allow it to be easily transported on most military transport aircraft in service with the U.S. military and its allies and the KC-390 Millennium produced by Embraer Defesa e Segurança.
