On Tuesday, October 11, Vila Madalena, in São Paulo, was elected the 13th coolest neighborhood in the world in 2022.
The indication is from the international tourism magazine Time Out, which released the annual ranking for the fifth consecutive year.
To arrive at the final result, the publication revealed that it surveyed, in 14 languages, readers around the globe in the last six months to hear their opinions about what is best in each destination.
In addition, its editors and local reporters also collaborated with suggestions and combined personal assessments.
The São Paulo neighborhood – the second-highest ranked in South America, second only to Chile’s Barrio Yungay in the ninth position – was praised for its eternal youthful charm.
According to Time Out, Vila Madalena’s bohemian personality was given “by University of São Paulo (USP) students who arrived in the 1980s seduced by the appeal of cheaper rents and caipirinhas.”
However, the publication points out that its streets are still full of “tattooed 20-somethings partying on Rua Aspicuelta,” thanks to the abundance of bars and samba shows that attract regular people of all ages.
Time Out recommends visitors try the artisanal cafes and galleries and stop by “Beco do Batman” (Batman Alley) to see the outdoor graffiti that reflects “the work of São Paulo’s best street artists.”
The good cheese bread and coffee from Coffee Lab and what was considered “the best pizza out of Italy,” served at Carlos Pizza, were highlighted.
Other honorable mentions were given to the mix of samba, appetizers, and “stupidly cold” beer at Posto 6 and Salve Jorge bars and the handicrafts at the Vila Madalena Art Fair.
