Brazil challenges EU barriers against poultry meat and triggers WTO dispute settlement

The Brazilian government yesterday triggered the WTO (World Trade Organization) Dispute Settlement System against the EU (European Union) due to the bloc's barriers against salted chicken and turkey meat with pepper from Brazil.

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL - The measure was announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which said it had lodged a request for consultations to the EU against the barriers, described as "unjustified" by the Ministry.

Consultations can be perceived as an initial step. In this case, the EU would provide further information on the practices objected to and Brazil could propose changes, aiming for a kind of agreement between the parties. However, there is still no date set for the talks.
