Retirees demonstrate in Uruguay for an increase in pensions

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – On May 12, Uruguayan retirees and pensioners demonstrated in Montevideo to demand increased pensions and rejected the government’s position on the loss of purchasing power.

The demonstrators denounced the current economic situation in the vicinity of the Ministry of Economy. They rejected the financial adjustments made by the government, which had promised a 3% increase on account of the next adjustments, to be paid from August.

The activist of the National Organization of Retirees and Pensioners of Uruguay (Onajpu), Brenda Mora, described the economic situation as unthinkable. “We need to vindicate our rights. Our economic position, which has been going down,” she expressed.

“For our rights and dignity, an increase of pensions and pensions against the high cost” was one of the slogans that guided the pensioners’ demonstrations in Uruguay.

Similarly, the member of Onajpu, Daniel Baldassari, denounced that there is a crisis and “they cannot say that they are going to give them an adjustment in three and a half months;” at the same time, he warned about inflation which “has already eaten 80% in four months”.

The proposal of the mobilized workers comes days after the presentation of a request to the President of the Republic to present their demands, in the context in which the government is trying to finalize a proposal for the reform of the social security system, which would imply increasing the retirement age.
