Peru’s President reaffirms defense of self-determination of the Saharawi Republic

The President of Peru, Pedro Castillo, reaffirmed his position in favor of the self-determination of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) after his government decided in August to break off relations and withdraw its state recognition.

"A year after establishing diplomatic relations with the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic, we reaffirm our persistence [in] the defense of its sovereign self-determination," the president said through his Twitter account.

Diplomatic relations between Peru and SADR began in May 1987 but were suspended in 1996 under Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000).
