Colombian government to buy 3 million hectares of land to give to uprooted farmers

Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced last night that his government would buy three million hectares of land to give to uprooted farmers.

The agreement was signed between the Colombian leader, who took office Aug. 7, and the Colombian Federation of Cattle Breeders (Fedegán) president, José Félix Lafaurie.

“This photo, in my opinion, will make history. It is the pact between Fedegán and the government for change. It guarantees the peasantry’s acquisition of three million hectares with maximum fertility. The social pact and peace are possible,” Petro wrote on his Twitter account.

Lafaurie recently said he supports the proposal of President Petro, who has announced his intention to implement a comprehensive agrarian reform during his four-year term.
