Record number of Brazilians deported from the U.S. from January to July 2022

The number of Brazilians deported from the United States reached its highest level in the first seven months of 2022, with 2,423 citizens deported on 19 flights chartered by the U.S. government, the Federal Police told Globo.

The volume is comparable to the total number of people who had to leave the country last year: 2,447. The average number of deportees per month was 204 in 2021 and 346 in 2022, an increase of 69% through July.

According to experts, most deportees went to Minas Gerais and São Paulo. The reasons for the increase are mainly economic, but also weighed the greater rigor in the control of migration authorities with the Covid 19 pandemic and a change in Brazilian law in 2019.

Brazil signed an agreement with the U.S. government under which the deported Brazilian will no longer need a passport.

The document will now be replaced by a declaration proving the person’s original citizenship. Then-President Jair Bolsonaro complied with a request from then-U.S. President Donald Trump.

But the election of Joe Biden did not soften the system of detaining illegals and deporting them.

Mauricio Ejchel, a lawyer who handles cases of Brazilians in both Brazil and the U.S., says the conditions in the treatment of these people are “inhumane at all times,” from arrest to detention in prisons and when they return in handcuffs.

– Low food supplies, overcrowding in cells, and harsh treatment by authorities are reports I have been able to ascertain – he says.

The treatment of Brazilians is an aggravating factor in relations between Brazil and the United States. The two countries governments have been talking about this issue for some time, but no progress has been made.

According to a diplomatic source, the Brazilians are being held with a final order of deportation. Therefore, it is better to return than to stay in prison with strangers and far away from relatives.
