Bolsonaro says Brazil will experience ‘biggest deflation since the Plano Real’
President Jair Bolsonaro said Tuesday (2) in an interview with SBT News that deflation in the country will be the biggest since the Plano Real*.
According to Bolsonaro, Brazilians will feel a reduction in electricity bills as early as this month.
Although the president did not specify which index he referred to when he spoke of deflation, the negative index should be verified only in administered prices.
This will be the first annual deflation seen in managed items since the Plano Real due to fiscal measures’ impact on reducing fuel and energy prices.
Calculations are based on the historical National Wide Consumer Price Index (IPCA) series used by ASA Investments. Market estimates for the IPCA in 2022 are 7.15%, above the inflation target.
Bolsonaro said the dollar is not rising against the Brazilian currency due to the government’s fiscal responsibility.
In another attempt to reduce Brazil’s dependence on fertilizers from the international market, Bolsonaro also said in the interview that he had been studying the use of algae but gave no details.
*The Plano Real was a set of measures taken to stabilize the Brazilian economy in 1994, during the presidency of Itamar Franco. Its architects were led by the Minister of Finance and succeeding president Fernando Henrique Cardoso.
The Plano Real was based on an analysis of the root causes of hyperinflation in the New Republic of Brazil that concluded that there was an issue of fiscal policy and severe, widespread inertial inflation. The Plano Real intended to stabilize the domestic currency in nominal terms after a string of failed plans to control inflation.
