Fourth bridge between Brazil and Argentina approved

Brazil authorized the construction of a 1.4km bridge over the Uruguay River valued at R$211 million (US$40 million) to link the city of Porto Xavier in the state of Rio Grande do Sul with the Argentine municipality of San Javier.

The local firm Coesa Construção e Montagens will be in charge of the bridge construction on highway BR-392, the Ministry of Infrastructure informed in a statement. The company will soon receive the environmental licenses.

Engineering and construction should be completed within three years and 11 months.

“The new connection between the two countries has been expected for more than 40 years and will be the fourth of its kind in the country,” the statement said.

“In Rio Grande do Sul, the new bridge will be an alternative to the other two projects over the Uruguay River, on [highways] BR-287/RS (São Borja/Santo Tomé) and BR-290/RS (Uruguaiana/Paso de los Libres).

“In Paraná, the bridge over the Iguaçu River, on highway BR-277/PR, connects Foz do Iguaçu (Paraná) with the Argentine municipality of Puerto Iguaçu,” he added.
