Acting President Mourão Opposes Carlos Bolsonaro’s Speech: “Democracy is Fundamental”

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Acting president Hamilton Mourão said the statements of Councilman Carlos Bolsonaro are “his [Carlos’] problem”.

In contrast to President Jair Bolsonaro‘s son, Mourão argued that democracy is “fundamental” and that it is “logical” and possible to make changes in the country through dialogue with Congress.

“Of course, if not, we would not have been elected,” said Mourão when asked if it is possible to make the changes that the government wants through democratic means. “We have to negotiate with the guys on the other side of the Square (of the Three Powers). That’s how it works. With clarity, determination and a lot of patience,” he said.

On Monday, September 9th, on social networks, Carlos said that, by democratic means, there will not be the rapid changes desired in the country. Asking directly about the councilman’s speech, Mourão answered: “Carlos Bolsonaro? go ask him. This is his problem, ask him,” he stated as he reacted to the fact that Carlos had given a contradicting opinion.

Mourão was questioned on the subject at the entrance to the Planalto Palace where he continues to act from the vice-presidency office in the absence of Bolsonaro. He should remain as interim president in office until Thursday, September 12th.

“[Democracy is] fundamental and the pillar of Western civilization. I will repeat for you: the pact of generations, democracy, capitalism, and a strong civil society. Without it, Western civilization does not exist,” the vice president told journalists.
