Bitcoin ETFs Attract 12 Times More Money Than Gold ETFs in First Year

The financial landscape shifted in 2024 as Bitcoin Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) made their debut. These new investment vehicles quickly gained traction among individual and institutional investors, outperforming traditional gold ETFs in their first year.

A report by cryptocurrency exchange Binance revealed that Bitcoin ETFs attracted $18.9 billion in net inflows from January to October 2024.

This figure significantly exceeded the $1.5 billion raised by gold ETFs in their initial year back in 2004. Bitcoin ETFs have opened doors for a wider range of investors to participate in the cryptocurrency market.

They offer a familiar and regulated way to gain exposure to Bitcoin without directly owning the digital asset. Institutional interest has been particularly strong.

Regulatory filings show that 1,200 institutional investors added these products to their portfolios in the first ten months. This far surpasses the 95 institutions that invested in gold ETFs during their initial year.

By October 2024, the total market size for Bitcoin ETFs reached $63.3 billion, nearly half of the $130.9 billion accumulated by gold ETFs over two decades.

In addition, BlackRock’s IBIT led the pack with $26.4 billion in assets, followed by Grayscale’s GBTC and Fidelity’s FBTC.

Record-Breaking Launch of Bitcoin ETFs

The launch of Bitcoin ETFs broke records from day one, with investors pouring over $4 billion into these funds on their first trading day. This demand surpassed any previous ETF launch in the past 30 years.

While Bitcoin ETFs soared, Ethereum ETFs, launched in July 2024, struggled to gain traction. They experienced outflows of $44.7 million in their first three months, highlighting Bitcoin’s unique appeal in the ETF space.

The success of Bitcoin ETFs reflects the growing acceptance of cryptocurrencies in mainstream finance. They provide a bridge between traditional investment methods and digital assets, potentially paving the way for more innovative financial products.

Experts predict continued growth for Bitcoin ETFs. Ric Edelman, a respected voice in financial services, estimates these funds could attract $150 billion in the coming years, underscoring their potential long-term impact on the investment world.
