Insights on Stock Selection

Investors should not rely solely on dividend yield when selecting stocks, according to Filipe Ferreira, director at Comdinheiro, a financial information platform.

In addition, he emphasizes the importance of considering inflation, sector crises, and the company’s investor remuneration policies.

Ferreira advises investors to adopt a broader perspective by assessing the macroeconomic conditions affecting the company, long-term trends, and overall performance.

Recent reports indicate that dividend payments in 2024 have already matched last year’s total, defying earlier pessimistic forecasts from late 2023.

By September, Brazilian companies had distributed R$ 222.18 billion ($39 billion) in dividends, interest on equity, and other shareholder compensations, surpassing the R$ 171.8 billion ($30.68) allocated during the same timeframe last year.

In total, Brazilian firms returned R$ 224.2 billion ($40 billion) to shareholders in all of 2023. Petrobras stands out as the Brazilian company with the highest dividend yield this year.

Both its preferred and ordinary shares lead in percentage returns among stocks, as highlighted by Comdinheiro’s exclusive analysis for Valor.
