Usiminas, a leading Brazilian steel producer, has reported impressive third-quarter results for 2024, marking a significant turnaround from previous periods.
The company’s performance has reignited investor confidence, with its shares (USIM5) surging by nearly 6% in early trading on October 25, 2024.
The steelmaker posted a net profit of R$185 million ($33 million) for Q3 2024, reversing losses from both the previous quarter and the same period last year.
This result far exceeded market expectations, with analysts having projected a modest profit of R$11 million. Usiminas’ operational performance showed notable improvements across key metrics.
The company’s steel sales volume reached 1.12 million tons, representing an 8% increase quarter-over-quarter and a 10% rise year-over-year. This growth reflects strengthening demand in the domestic market, particularly in the automotive and construction sectors.
The company’s EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) demonstrated remarkable progress, reaching R$426 million ($76 million).
This figure represents a 72% increase compared to the previous quarter and a significant turnaround from the R$20 million loss reported in the same period last year.
The adjusted EBITDA margin rose to 6%, an improvement of 2.4 percentage points from the previous quarter and 6.5 percentage points year-over-year.
Usiminas Reports Strong Quarterly Revenue Growth
Usiminas’ net revenue for the quarter totaled R$6.8 billion ($1.21 billion), marking a 7% increase from the previous quarter and a 2% rise compared to the same period in 2023.
This growth in revenue, coupled with improved operational efficiency, contributed to the company’s strong financial performance.
The company’s mining division also showed positive results, with iron ore sales volume reaching 2.28 million tons. While this represents a 14% increase from the previous quarter, it’s a 4% decrease compared to the same period last year.
Usiminas has updated its capital expenditure forecast for 2024, reducing it to R$1.1 billion ($196 million). This is down from the previous projection of R$1.7-1.9 billion ($303-339 million).
This adjustment reflects a more conservative approach to spending amid ongoing market uncertainties. Financial analysts have responded positively to Usiminas’ results.
The Itaú BBA highlighted the company’s performance, noting that the EBITDA was 6% above their estimates. The Morgan Stanley team emphasized the strong cash flow from operations and the steel division’s EBITDA exceeding consensus expectations.
Looking ahead, Usiminas has signaled continued improvements in cost performance for Q4 2024, further boosting market confidence.
However, analysts caution that sustained performance over multiple quarters will be crucial for long-term investor confidence. As Usiminas navigates the complex global steel market, its ability to maintain this positive momentum will be closely watched.
The company’s success in balancing operational efficiency, market demand, and strategic investments will be crucial. These factors will determine its future trajectory in the Brazilian and global steel industry.
